Collection of Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, Massachusetts.MA 001.038Circular issued by three Masonic lodges in Chicago (Lafayette Lodge No. 18, Apollo Lodge No. 32, and Oriental Lodge No. 33) in response to charges issued in a circular by Harmony Lodge, No. 3, of Jacksonville, Illinois. In their circular, Harmony Lodge which objected to an African American Mason visiting white lodges in Chicago. This circular explains that A.B. Lewis, described in the circular as a "well-bred mulatto," had a diploma (certificate) from another Grand Lodge and had visited some lodges in Chicago.
