Patricia starts by talking about her background. She’s originally from Trinidad, and came to New York in 1971 or 2 to attend college. She originally lived in Queens, where she had family, but then started attending Pratt and liked Brooklyn so much she moved there. In 1982 she moved to Lefferts Avenue. Her daughter was born there and went to P.S. 241. She discusses the school options in her neighborhood and the decision to send her daughter out of the neighborhood for middle school, to Physical City in Manhattan. She talks about how the demographics at Physical City were different, and how it was a small school and more liberal. For high school, Patricia said her daughter considered going to some high schools in Manhattan but ended up getting a scholarship to attend boarding school in Maryland. Patricia talks about how she felt it was important for her daughter to have many different experiences. For example, at Physical City she had a teacher who took them to flight school. Her daughter also went to Thailand with a program called Global Teens. After high school her daughter decided to go to Howard for college because she missed being with people from her culture. John tells us about his background. He was born in Seattle but his parents moved around a lot when he was a kid, and eventually they settled in New Canaan, Connecticut.
