Description

Sullivan, police commissioner of Montgomery, Alabama, had filed the libel suit against The New York Times in response to an advertisement published in the paper, soliciting funds for the legal defense of Martin Luther King, Jr. The Montgomery circuit court ruled in favor of Sullivan, awarding him $500,000. The New York Times later appealed the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which overturned this ruling.
