Holograph, signedTitle devised by catalogerManuscript annotated on recto, with "28" in pencil to the left of letterhead addressManuscript penned by Plumer, and signed by multiple personsRichard Plumer, writing on the behalf of many undersigned fellow citizens of Newburyport, invites William Lloyd Garrison to deliver an address in Newburyport in celebration of the ratification and passage of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution. Plumer declares their wish for Garrison to lecture in his place of birth owing to his having been "the first person openly and publicly to advocate the unconditional and universal abolition of slavery in the United States", and states their steadfast admiration for Garrison's commitment to principle even in the face of public scorn
