Encyclopedia article about Anthony "Tony" M. Grooms, African American writer and arts administrator who is well known in the Atlanta area for his work in organizing arts events and for his support and encouragement of other writers. He was raised in rural Louisa County, Virginia and grew up among an extended family of African American, Native American, and European heritage. Grooms' parents encouraged education and in 1967 enrolled him in the Freedom of Choice plan that brought about limited integration of the white public schools. In 1978 Grooms graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in theater and speech and in 1984 he graduate from George Mason University with a fine arts degree in English. After moving to Atlanta Grooms including the Civil Rights movement as a subject in his writing.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
