Frantzy Luzincourt is a high school student in South Brooklyn. He lives in East Flatbush, a mostly West Indian neighborhood. He talks about how going to school in a more affluent neighborhood has provided him with educational opportunities but has been more limiting socially and culturally because the school is not that diverse. Frantzy talks about how education is very important in his family—him and his brother are expected to give “200 percent” to their schoolwork. He says his parents believe that education is an equalizer and that it will be a barrier against injustice, but he knows that a degree cannot protect against racism. He explains that because of his good grades he was able to go to better school outside of his neighborhood. He says his school challenges him academically, and that there are a lot of internship and extracurricular opportunities, though most of the clubs are not very diverse. Lunch is his favorite part of the day, when he gets to talk with his friends and share what he has learned. In the lunchroom, he usually hangs out with people of his ethnicity though he has recently become friends with a more diverse group through his participation in basketball. Social studies is his favorite subject because many of the things that are happening now can be explained by history. Typically, after school he goes home to study and work on projects.
