Description
Deposition of William S. Mitchell, Assistant Agent for Indian Affairs, related to the events that surrounded the transportation of Africans to the Creek Indian territory, 1817-1818.In October 1817 ninety-five African slaves were allegedly taken by privateers from the Portuguese ship "Jesu Nasareno," owned by Miguel de Castro. The Africans, originally bound for Havana, Cuba, were taken to Amelia Island off the coast of East Florida, sold to William Bowen, an agent for a Savannah merchant, and subsequently transported through Georgia to the Creek Indian territory. The ensuing case involved violations of the Non Importation Act of Congress (1807) in which the importation of slaves into the United States was outlawed.
