Description
William Hawkins (b. 1777 - d. 1819), North Carolina's seventeenth governor, attended Princeton and received his law license in 1797. In 1801, he was appointed by Governor James Turner to negotiate a settlement with the remaining Tuscarora Indians of Bertie County. Elected as Governor for three terms (1811-1814), he served as chief executive during the War of 1812. His third and last term as governor ended only weeks prior to the war's successful conclusion.
