The Givens Ephemera Collection contains diverse subject files on African American figures, with a focus on those in the performing and creative arts. This folder contains the sheet music for ""Who Knows?"" music by Ernest Ball, words Paul Lawrence Dunbar; ""Back, Back, Back to Baltimore,"" music by Egbert Van Alstyne, words by Harry H. Williams, and ""Coon, Coon, Coon,"" music by Leo Friedman, words by Gene Jefferson. This music briefly the diversity of African American representation in popular song, from the sentimental lyrics by African American poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar to the racial caricatures displayed in the turn of the century popular music genre of ""coon songs,"" a genre marked by use of epithets and stereotyping toward African Americans.
