Description

Virginia Governor Thomas B. Stanley addresses members of the Virginia General Assembly during a special session in Richmond, Va., denouncing Supreme Court efforts to integrate public schools as "the gravest problem since 1865" and proposing a bill aimed at maintaining statewide segregation. The bill states that the integration of public school children in Virginia "constitutes a clear and present danger," and that any public school that adopts a policy of integration will be denied state funding. Stanley specifies that the state will continue to pay the salaries of teachers left unemployed in the case of any integration-related public school closures, emphasizing that school closures, should there be any, will be the fault of individuals "of one race" attempting to "force" their way into the school of another race, rather than the fault of the legislation itself.
