Description

On June 23, 1964, President Johnson spent much of the day speaking with individuals regarding three missing civil rights workers in Mississippi. He met with the parents of two of the missing workers, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, and spoke by phone with a number of officials including FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, former CIA director Allen Dulles, Mississippi Governor Paul Johnson, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, and Mississippi Senator James Eastland. At 5:15 p.m., the President met with Ismet Inonu, Prime Minister of Turkey. Later in the evening he met with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, and Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Burke Marshall.
