Description

Audio recording of an excerpt from the slave narrative Slave Life in Georgia by John Brown, read by Jay Williams. In this excerpt, Brown describes traveling to Georgia with a group of other slaves. He outlines a story in which a young female slave is stolen from her owner, raped by Brown's owner, and then sold her for profit. He also mentions a Methodist preacher whose reputation painted him as a brutal slave master. He then describes the humiliation he suffers when his master attempts to sell him, but other slave owners judge him to be too old and not robust enough. Upon being sold, Brown notes that he is set to hard labor in the fields, and his new master treats him cruelly. He describes the injury he suffers to his face and eyes after his owner kicks him in the face with a boot. Brown's right eye was dislocated, and he was unable to see for two months. He reports that he was never able to fully see again.
