This recording opens with an introduction of the program by Boyd Lewis. The first segment, which begins at 1:51, is a rebroadcast a "Southwind" segment that aired in September 1983 about journalist and author Paul Hemphill, Jr. and his father, Paul Hemphill, Sr. Both are interviewed by journalist Scott Ferguson. The younger Hemphill talks about the changing nature of his hometown, Birmingham, Alabama, his upcoming book, and about his alma mater, Auburn University. Hemphill's father, Paul Hemphill, Sr., offers his opinions on the cause of the Civil War and his anti union and anti environmental opinions. The second segment, which begins at 19:45, is an interview with Atlanta author and poet Carolyn Bechtel Mann, who talks about Vidalia onions. The program ends with a sign off by Boyd Lewis."Southwind" was a radio program about the issues, people, and culture of the South that aired on WABE-FM, Atlanta's public radio station. The series, which aired from 1980 to 1987, was conceived, produced, and reported by journalist Boyd Lewis.
