She became the most popular gospel singer of her time betwen the late 1940s and the early 1970s. In addition to her groundbreaking work in mainstreaming Black gospel, Jackson was also extremely active in the Civil Rights movement. She performed at both the March on Washington in 1963 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral.
