Encyclopedia article about African American Baptists. Baptists have been the largest African American religious group in Georgia since the late eighteenth century. African American Baptist churches, institutionally separate from white Baptist churches, have made contributions to the identity of black people in the state by shaping behavior and belief, serving as centers of community life, and creating independent spaces free from the control of white society.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
