A ship sails on the water in the distance.Renowned African American artist Henry Ossawa Tanner is known for his portraits, religious works, and genre paintings. He studied under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts but eventually moved to France, where his race proved less of an obstacle to his career.
