Description

Woodson became the second African American, after W.E.B. Du Bois to earn his Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 1915 he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (Association for the Study of Afro American Life and History) and The Journal of Negro History. In 1926 after recognizing the lack of attention provided in academia and the mainstream to African American contributions to American history he initiated the celebration of Negro History Week, which in 1976 was expanded to included all of the month of February and to be named Black History Month.
