Description

In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips from October 9, 1963, American classical pianist Van Cliburn is interviewed by concert promoter Marvin McDonald about his concert in Atlanta on the following day, October 10, 1963. Cliburn expresses his enthusiasm about playing in Atlanta and says this will be his fourth time playing there. Cliburn comments on the kind reception he received in Russia when he played there in 1958, 1960, and 1962. When asked if a particular Russian class likes classical music more than other classes, Cliburn replies that the liking of music, or any art form, is dependent on the individual. When asked about the Russians' favorite music, Cliburn says that they enjoy all types of music. Cliburn says that his favorite classical composer is Johannes Brahms, but enjoys all music. When asked about the "parallel" between classical music and modern jazz, Cliburn says that the improvisatory nature of jazz does not demand the same "exacting scientific mental reactions" that recreating an already-composed score does. In a second take of the interview, Cliburn reiterates his comments about playing in Atlanta. He thanks concert promoter Marvin McDonald, who is interviewing him, and mentions that the concert will be in Atlanta's Municipal Auditorium. In a third take, Cliburn says the concert will take place "tonight," in case the interview is shown the same day as the concert.Reporter: McDonald, MarvinTitle supplied by cataloger.
