View of Atlanta businessman Jesse Hill, Jr. and his wife Azira Hill at a press conference in Atlanta, Georgia about the Anti-Defamation League Award Jesse Hill, Jr. received.From 1973 to 1992, Jesse Hill, Jr. (1927- ) served as president and CEO of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, which became the largest black-owned insurance company in the country under his tenure. In 1973, he became the first African American appointed to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. In 1977, he became president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, making him the first African American to head a major metropolitan chamber of commerce in the United States. Hill also founded the African American newspaper, The Atlanta Inquirer.
