Description

Photograph of an actor performing as a Mound Builder in the Pageant of Pageant and Masque of St. Louis. In an effort to bring the citizens of St. Louis, Missouri, together in a common effort, civic leaders staged the four-hour Pageant and Masque of St. Louis in Forest Park for four nights, May 28-31, 1914. The Pageant of St. Louis traced the history of the city from its ancient past as home of the Mound-builders through the arrival of European settlers, the Louisiana Purchase, the citys 19th century expansion, and the Civil War. The Masque, an allegorical fantasy, presented a symbolic interpretation of St. Louis history.
