Description

Photograph of a young woman in costume as a Mound Builder carrying a basket of corn. In an effort to bring the citizens of St. Louis, Missouri, together in a common effort, civic leaders staged the four-hour Pageant and Masque of St. Louis in Forest Park for four nights, May 28-31, 1914. The Pageant of St. Louis traced the history of the city from its ancient past as home of the Mound Builders through the arrival of European settlers, the Louisiana Purchase, the citys 19th century expansion, and the Civil War. The Masque, an allegorical fantasy, presented a symbolic interpretation of St. Louis history.
