Bill of sale dated March 23, 1850 for a Negro slave named Jerry sold by Henry W. Warfield of Daviess County, Kentucky to Henry Warfield of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The sale is in the amount of $560. Witnessed by Thomas W. Watkins of N. and Littleton Maclin and recorded by Daviess County clerk William B. Wall and deputy clerk George C. Sebastian on March 25 and witnessed by Thomas W. Watkins of N. and Justice of the Peace Littleton Maclin and recorded by the district (Howard District) clerk W. H. Worthington on May 17 and then on June 4, the document identifies Jerry as age 19 years (as of December 1, 1849) and, as stipulated in the will of Major Henry Welling, the great uncle of Henry W. Warfield who inherited Jerry, to be manumitted when he (Jerry) reaches age 35 years. Included also are affidavits from Justice of the Peace S. (Simpson) Stout attesting to the official status of Wall and Sebastian and from clerk William B. Wall attesting to the official status of Simpson Stout. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851.
