Description

Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands reviewed labor contract between landowners and Montgomery County, Alabama freedmen. This record has been transcribed as follows:A contract for labor between F.M.J. Tankersley & Casey Middlebrooks & Moses Stuart & his daughter Moriah[.] I, F.M.J. Tankersley, obligate myself to pay Casey Middlebrooks one hundred and seventy dollars and Moses Stuart one hundred & sixty dollars for himself and seventy dollars for his daughter Moriah I further agree to allow Casey Middlebrooks and Moses Stuart to have six hens & one rooster each to raise chickens[?] from. Also to have about three shoats to raise [.] Also houses for them and their families to stay in Also to let them (Casey & Moses) have one or two acres of land for a patch I agree to furnish Casey & Moses & Moriah with rations of baens[sic] and corne[sic] meal untill[sic] the 1st day of January 1869 Also to have medical attendance when necessary, which they are to pay for themselves and it is expressly understood & agreed that I am to control and direct the above named laborer reserving to the full control of the plantation without restrictions I Casey Middlebrooks, Moses Stuart & Moriah laborers obligate and bind ourselves to labor faithfully for said Tankersley each day (Sundays excepted from field labor) until[sic] the 1st day of January 1869 and do faithful labor obeying all orders made by the said Tankersley or any other person for him and we also obligate ourselves to...
