Charlie H. “Devil” Gaines, trumpeter, and father of the trumpeter Charles Gaines Jr. was an important musician in the Philadelphia Jazz scene. He was a regular performer at the Nixon Ballroom, the Walton Room, and the Cathay Tea Garden. Among the greats he played with throughout his career include Louis Armstrong, Ethel waters, and Fats Waller.
