Encyclopedia article about Maynard Jackson who was the first African American to serve as mayor of a major southern city. Jackson remained a highly influential force in city politics as a lawyer in the securities field after leaving elected office. He worked closely with others to bring the 1996 Olympic Games to Atlanta. Jackson attended Morehouse College, Boston University law school and North Carolina Central University. He worked as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board and served on numerous boards including those of Morehouse College, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Georgia Department of Industry, Trade, and Tourism. He also played several major roles for the Democratic National Committee.The Civil Rights Digital Library received support from a National Leadership Grant for Libraries awarded to the University of Georgia by the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the aggregation and enhancement of partner metadata.
