Description

Small rim-sherd from a hand-painted pearlware vessel, possibly a bowl. Cobalt-blue underglaze painting includes a band around the rim, and other design elements (possibly floral). Such bowls were inspired by Chinese porcelain rice bowls, and probably had similar usage in a southern plantation context. Whether given to slaves, whole or damaged, or removed from the household surreptitiously, cannot be known from this fragment.
