Description
On April 4, 1968, President Johnson left Washington, D.C., for New York City to attend the ordination of the new Archbishop of New York, the Most Reverend Terence J. Cooke, at St. Patrick's Cathedral. In the afternoon the President visited with Ambassador Arthur Goldberg and Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations building. Johnson returned to the White House in the early evening. Shortly after 7 p.m., the President received word that Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot in Memphis, Tennessee. After learning of King's death, Johnson called Coretta Scott King. In the evening he addressed the American people on television.
