Description

On what McNair called the saddest day in the history of South Carolina, escalating tensions between law enforcement officials and African American students in Orangeburg exploded when several highway patrolmen fired into a crowd of African American students killing three and injuring more than thirty. McNair issued a controversial statement in which he attributed blame for the Orangeburg Massacre to Black Power groups. In Philip Grose's 2007 book South Carolina at the Brink, McNair delivered his most candid statement about the tragedy.
