Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white, lined paper with an embossed logo depicting an archer beneath an arm holding a sword, all above the letters "P & S", on the first and third pages. On the first page, under the embossed logo and above the first line of the letter, the number "71" is written in pencil.Gerrit Smith writes to William Lloyd Garrison expressing his "wish to go to Boston" and see his grandsons, "Wendell Phillips & the other Boston friends of freedom" and to "speak to the people of Boston." He tells Garrison that although he had to decline an invitation months ago "to speak in Theodore Parker's pulpit", if the offer was renewed while he was in Boston he would now accept it. Smith also discusses some of the topics he would like to speak about at the proposed meeting.
