Description

This folder contains materials related to the disappearance and murder of the three civil rights workers, Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman. The three disappeared while investigating a church burning near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Documents describe the FBI investigation into their disappearance, the involvement of the white citizens councils in monitoring the activities of civil rights workers in Mississippi, and the U.S. Dept. of Justice's subsequent involvement in search for the three missing men. Statements by various parties including Rita Schwerner and Bob Zellner, Lawrence Guyot of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, and SNCC chairman John Lewis are included.
