Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Manuscript annotated on recto, with "9" in pencil above Whittier's salutation to Garrison.Manuscript annotated on verso, with "A.1.2 v.32 p.6" in pencil along top-left margin of page.Manuscript dated "18th 1 mo 1863".John Greenleaf Whittier informs William Lloyd Garrison that he regrettably cannot acquiesce to Garrison's request for his assistance for an effort by the American Anti-Slavery Society, stating that "the spirit is indeed most willing but the flesh is weak".
