Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. On verso, the letter is addressed to "Rev. Samuel May, Jr. Leicester Mass." and it is postmarked with a red, circular stamp reading, "West Killingly Ct. Oct 16."Charles L. Fiske writes to Samuel May approving of the plan to hold "one of the 'One Hundred Conventions'" in Danielsonville, telling him that "all parties are ripe for such a meeting." He states that "the Whigs and Free-Soilers in particular" wished to have "a meeting of indignation to the 'Fugitive Slave Law'" but will now join May's meeting. Fiske says that he included a notice in the local newspaper about the meeting, with May, C.C. Burleigh, and Stephen S. Foster, listed as speakers. It also mentioned that the Fugitive Slave Law will be a topic of the meeting, "as this will bring out many." He asks May to write him and confirm the details of the notice so that "we may make early efforts to secure a full meeting."
