Description

Image of a photograph of George Foster Pierce, a Methodist minister and native of Greene County, Georgia. Pierce served as the president of both Georgia Female College and Emory College before his 1854 election as bishop. A supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War, Pierce defended the ownership of slaves by church leaders, an issue which created a breach between northern and southern Methodists.
