Description
This folder contains pages from the diary of Andrew Schiffrin, a Freedom Summer volunteer, from June 15, 1964 to June 30, 1964. His entries detail the Freedom Summer orientation in Oxford, Ohio and feed into his first days as a Freedom Summer volunteer in Mississippi. The notes from orientation explicitly describe the expected behaviors of Freedom Summer volunteers, including who to be seen and not seen with, rules about drinking and tips for driving with out-of-state license plates. Schiffrin's notes from meetings detail the words of speakers such as Preston Ponder, Bob Gore, Bob Moses and James Farmer, the first director of CORE. His experience coincides with the disappearance and murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, and the entries from those days are filled with notes from impassioned speakers and reflect the somber yet energized feelings of the time.
