Description

Mr. Allen reads the Tribune classified ads for houses to rent as Mrs. Allen dials the phone. Two of the family's 4 sons; 24-year-old veteran, Donald Jr. (standing, left), and 10-year-old John (standing, right); look over his shoulder to help with the search. The Allens moved into the tax-exempt housing project with very little income. Now that eldest son, Donald Jr., is back from the war and working; Mr. Allen has a better job; and 2 more sons are entering the military; the Allen's income is over the maximum permitted for occupancy in Sumner Field. With the current housing crisis however, there is no place to go. African American History.
