Warfield, Juliet

Description

Deed of manumission dated January 5, 1843 by Juliet Warfield of the Howard District of Anne Arundel County, Maryland for her Negro slaves named Alexander and Harriet. Witnessed by Reuben Warfield and Justice of the Peace Nicholas D. Warfield of Bela and recorded by district clerk John L. Moore, the document identifies Alexander as a servant boy who will be released from slavery on April 24, 1857, when he reaches age 30 years, and Harriet as a servant girl who will be released from slavery on December 1, 1856, when she reaches age 28 years and that if she has children while in service, the male children will be set free when each reaches age 25 years and the female children will be set free when each reaches age 20 years. (Editor's note: During this time period, Howard County was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County. Howard County was officially designated a county in 1851. During this time also, using the first initial of the first name or first name of the father, as in Nicholas D. Warfield "of Bela", was common practice if there were other persons with the same name, especially in various generations of the same family. Thus this Nicholas Warfield is "of Bela", i.e., the son of Bela Warfield.)
