Gatch, Marvin
Description
While still in the military, Marvin Gatch used his two-week vacation to work as a Freedom Summer volunteer in Mississippi. A journalism major, he thought that his best contribution might be to let the folks back home in Iowa know what was going on in Mississippi. He worked for about a week in a freedom summer prooject and then spent the rest of his time interviewing Iowans working as volunteers in Mississippi. He later wrote an approximately 35-page account of these Iowans' activities which he seems to have had difficulty publishing in its original incarnation. Among the papers in this folder are a blank application for work on the Mississippi Summer Project; newspaper clippings from the 1990s about Iowans' work as volunteers during Freedom Summer (apparently based on Gatch's research); a fundraising appeal from James Baldwin; his own letter of application for Freedom Summer, detailing the projects he would like to do as a journalism major in the two weeks he planned to be in Mississi
