Description

Photograph taken looking north at the west side of the 100 block North Caroline Street from its intersection with East Fayette Street in Baltimore, Maryland. This street consists mostly of three-story brick row houses, some of which have stores on the ground level, while others appear to be deserted. At the near corner, where a lunch room is located, an African American man is stepping up on the curb. Coca-Cola signs are positioned in the windows and on the outside walls of the building. Another African American man is sitting under an umbrella on a shoeshine stand next to the lunch room, having his shoes shined. Farther down the street an African American boy appears to be standing on the side of a handcart positioned between two parked cars. Tracks are embedded in the roadway, and electric lines for streetcars are suspended above the center of the street.
